Notes

On a grey but dry evening, we had the novel experience of winning the toss and choosing to bat. Our innings started very slowly and just as we seemed to be starting to score, a clatter of wickets pegged progress back. Elekta's bowling was very tight but Paul Long led a late surge, mainly based on his aggressive running and some friendly final over bowling. All the same 89 didn't seem enough. Indeed Elekta's innings started at 4 to 5 runs an over with no real problem. What is more, unlike most of the earlier matches this season, our fielding was poor, with catches going down and run out chances missed. Even the reliable Robbie's bowling was going astray! Jeff held a good slip catch (another novelty) but at 53-2 after 11 overs things were looking grim. However a couple of wickets and the introduction of Paul G started applying some pressure. Then the return of Robbie for his final two overs dried up the runs and brought us a steady flow of wickets (including a great one-handed catch by Jon). Suddenly they had gone from 73-5 with five overs remaining to 83-9 with one over left. Five huge swipes connected with very little and gained only two runs; so needing five to win off the final ball, the batsman charged and was stumped yards out. Victory from the jaws of defeat!
