Minutes of the 1994 AGM

The minutes of the previous year's AGM were taken as read.

Matters Arising

Bernie Wright apologised again for the late cancellation of the second Horley fixture in July. This was caused by the proximity to the Horley Cricket Week and he suggested that this year's fixture might be best played on the following Thursday (27th July).

Officers' Reports

Captain

John Cowie reported that 1994 had been an enjoyable, if not totally successful, season.

Some hilarity was caused by the suggestion that the relative rarity of the captain being dismissed LBW had been connected with his decision not to bat when the Secretary was umpiring!

Secretary

Andy Yule gave a brief resume of the 1994 season. Of the 16 matches we played, we won 6, lost 9 and had 1 match called off due to a mid-match downpour. A total of 23 different players turned out at some stage during the season, a bit of a drop compared to 1993. The batting performances were topped by Basil Stanley who totalled 178 runs at an average of over 25 and Jon Gowers who managed to average nearly 35 in his 7 innings. David Parker proved to by far the most successful bowler of the season with 28 wickets costing an average of under 7.5 runs each.

The Secretary reported that he intended to arrange the 1995 fixtures by mid-March but he had already been approached by a new club (Crawley Falcons - an offshoot of the Crawley NALGO team) . This lead to a general discussion of fixtures at which it was agreed that:

The Secretary said that (in his role as Chairman of the Sports and Social Club) he had become aware that PRL has plans to put a security camera at the corner of the playing field and that should reduce the chances of vandalism to the sight screens and the pavilion. There are also plans to improve the state of the road to the pavilion, but not until the weather improves. There will also be a trophy cabinet shortly although the likelihood of the Cricket section winning a trophy seems slight!

Treasurer

Paul Gough gave a report on behalf of David Yule who was unable to attend the meeting.

In 1994 we made a small profit (c. £90) largely because we made no major equipment purchases and, as has become the norm in recent years, the club's funds were boosted by a contribution from the Horley Baptist Church.

It was proposed that we should keep match fees the same for the 1995 season (£1 per match, plus 50p for food at home matches).

Team Secretary

David Walker reported that 1994 had been successful in that we had turned out 11 players for nearly all the matches, with only the week CRE causing any major problems (this year's will be held between the 9th and 16th of June).

Some discussion took place about the best means by which players could notify the Team Secretary about when they would be unavailable. Although various ideas were suggested (from pencil & paper through to custom computer systems) no decision was made. It was, however, agreed that players should try to give the Team Secretary (un)availability information well in advance, where possible.

Election of Officers

In line with the policy agreed at the 1993 AGM (that executive officers should hold a post for two years), the Captain, Vice-Captain, Secretary, Treasurer and Team Secretary were all re-elected (unopposed) for a second year in their respective posts.

The President also kindly agreed to stand for office again and was duly re-elected unopposed.

The 1995 officers will therefore be:

Any Other Business

It was agreed that Jon Gowers and David Yule would represent the Cricket club at the Sports and Social Club AGM.

It was agreed that the Captain should investigate the possibility of obtaining some plastic boundary flags before the start of the season.

It was also agreed that the Secretary should obtain a copy of the MCC coaching video for circulation around the club's members (we might learn something!).

The President said that he was looking for a volunteer to play in a team he was putting together to play on Monday 17th July at Horley. He was hoping to get a representative from all the local teams.

The meeting thanked Dave Cooper and Shirley Akehurst for the contribution they made during 1994 by, respectively, looking after the pitch and providing an excellent Sunday tea and jointly scoring for us.

The meeting closed at 1:50pm.
